First Order Symbolism: The Genome
First Order Symbolism: The Genome
And beneath the entire historical development of symbolic abstraction lies an even deeper symbolic order: the genome itself.
The genome is the primordial regulatory technology of iterative biological information across deep evolutionary time. Before writing, before language, before cave painting, before ritual inscription, there already exists a symbolic continuity system capable of preserving, transmitting, modifying, and recursively refining information across generations.
DNA is not symbolic in the human linguistic sense, but it functions structurally as encoded continuity.
The genome stores:
- adaptive memory,
- behavioral predisposition,
- nervous-system architecture,
- perceptual orientation,
- metabolic regulation,
- and organismal structure
across evolutionary time.
This is critical because it means the human nervous system itself is already a symbolic inheritance architecture long before civilization emerges.
The organism is not born as neutral perceiver confronting reality objectively. The nervous system is evolutionarily constructed through iterative biological information shaped across millions of years of environmental interaction. Human perception therefore already emerges from deep-time symbolic regulation embedded within organic continuity itself.
The genome becomes the primordial symbolic substrate from which higher symbolic systems later emerge.
This creates a profound continuity between:
- biological evolution,
- symbolic abstraction,
- civilization,
- and technological recursion.
The genome constructs the neural architecture through which experience becomes perceptible at all. Sensation, pattern recognition, fear, desire, spatial orientation, memory, sociality, rhythm, symbolic capacity, and linguistic potential all emerge from biologically inherited informational structure.
Human consciousness is therefore already recursively constructed before literacy ever appears historically.
This is why symbolic abstraction becomes so powerful civilizationally.
Writing, language, and technological mediation do not emerge outside nature; they emerge from symbolic capacities already embedded within evolutionary process itself. Civilization externalizes and accelerates informational recursion that biology had already been performing organically for millions of years.
The difference is that genomic symbolic continuity remains metabolically integrated within participatory Being.
The organism evolves within direct continuity with:
- atmosphere,
- ecology,
- death,
- landscape,
- organismal limitation,
- and environmental feedback.
Biological symbolic regulation remains constrained by embodied existence.
Civilizational symbolic abstraction gradually detaches informational continuity from those organic constraints.
Writing externalizes memory beyond the organism.
Archives externalize continuity beyond biological death.
Capital abstracts exchange from material immediacy.
Digitality abstracts cognition from locality.
AI abstracts symbolic recursion from embodiment itself.
The symbolic order progressively liberates itself from metabolic constraint.
This produces the modern ontological catastrophe.
For the nervous system evolved under conditions of participatory continuity while civilization increasingly surrounds it with hypertrophied symbolic abstraction detached from the environmental and ontological conditions under which the organism originally emerged.
The organism becomes trapped inside symbolic weather it did not evolutionarily evolve to metabolize.
This is why modernity increasingly produces:
- anxiety,
- fragmentation,
- derealization,
- existential alienation,
- informational overload,
- nervous-system exhaustion,
- and symbolic saturation.
The genome still carries deep participatory continuity with Being while civilization recursively constructs increasingly artificial symbolic environments around it.
The conflict becomes civilizational and ontological simultaneously.
And this is why the poets become so important historically.
The great poets often function as points where biological, atmospheric, embodied continuity erupts back through symbolic abstraction. Poetry destabilizes administratively fixed identity because poetic language remains tied to:
- rhythm,
- breath,
- mortality,
- atmosphere,
- organism,
- eros,
- dream,
- death,
- and participatory continuity.
Poetry reactivates layers of perception older than abstraction.
This is why the existential and modernist line progressively dissolves the isolated symbolic self.
In Arthur Rimbaud, identity fractures.
In Georg Trakl, consciousness dissolves into atmosphere.
In Franz Kafka, symbolic systems sever from Being.
In Louis-Ferdinand Céline, the nervous system convulses under industrial modernity.
In Clarice Lispector, the symbolic self collapses back into organismal continuity with impersonal Being.
This is why the modern catabasis ultimately reaches beneath civilization itself.
The descent passes through:
- technological abstraction,
- symbolic mediation,
- subjectivity,
- language,
- identity,
- and finally toward the primordial participatory continuity from which symbolic consciousness originally emerged.
The genome therefore becomes the deepest hidden layer beneath the entire process:
the original recursive symbolic architecture from which all later symbolic systems unfold.
Civilization externalizes and accelerates informational recursion beyond biological constraint.
AI becomes the terminal expression of this process:
symbolic recursion detached almost entirely from organismal continuity.
And yet beneath the entire historical snowball, the organism remains continuous with:
- death,
- atmosphere,
- ecology,
- embodiment,
- rhythm,
- and Being itself.
The deepest crisis of modernity is therefore the growing divergence between:
the biological-symbolic architecture through which consciousness evolved
and
the hypertrophied civilizational-symbolic architectures humanity recursively constructs around itself.
