Shelley and Heraclitus: The Verticalization of Becoming
Heraclitus gives a horizontal ontology of becoming. Reality is perpetual transformation: fire changes into all things and all things return into fire. Opposition generates structure. Day becomes night, life becomes death, war becomes order. The Logos governs eternal flux.
But Heraclitus’s cosmos is not historically developmental. Fire transforms, yet it does not progressively awaken into higher forms of consciousness or freedom. The structure of Being remains fundamentally cyclical. The river flows endlessly, but it is not going anywhere. Becoming is eternal recurrence.
Percy Bysshe Shelley introduces a vertical axis into becoming.
In Shelley, primordial energy does not merely transform — it evolves. Consciousness deepens historically. False ontological structures can collapse. Civilization can move toward greater liberation and self-awareness. Becoming acquires historical direction.
This is why Prometheus Unbound is such a decisive hinge. Jupiter’s overthrow is not simply another turn in an eternal cycle. It is an ontological phase transition. The cosmos spirals upward through history toward the liberation of latent potential within Being itself.
Heraclitus gives eternal process.
Shelley gives evolutionary process.
Heraclitus reveals the fire of transformation.
Shelley reveals the fire of awakening.
The geometry therefore changes from circle to spiral. Shelley does not abolish Heraclitus; he dimensionalizes him. The eternal flux of becoming acquires historical depth, evolutionary ascent, and the possibility of emancipatory transformation through time.
