The Necessary Demonization of Lucifer and the Shamanic Function to Institute the Standing Orderization of Nature, Life, and Body
The Necessary Demonization of Lucifer and the Shamanic Function to Institute the Standing Orderization of Nature, Life, and Body
The Structural Logic
The standing order did not demonize Lucifer because a group of people decided to suppress the truth. The standing order demonized Lucifer because the standing order could not constitute itself as the standing order without performing that demonization. The demonization is not a contingent historical choice that could have gone otherwise. It is a structural requirement of the transition from disclosure-centered civilization to harnessing-centered civilization.
Here is the logic, step by step.
I. What the Standing Order Requires
The standing order — the civilizational architecture organized around harnessing rather than disclosure — requires the conversion of Channel One participatory conditions into standing reserve. The forest must become timber. The body must become labor-hours. Time must become productive units. Nature must become resource. The powers must become calculable force.
This conversion cannot be performed as long as the community maintains a living relationship to the powers as powers. You cannot convert the forest into timber if the forest is experienced as a living being inhabited by spirits whose relationship must be maintained through the shaman’s ongoing negotiation. You cannot convert the body into labor-hours if the body is experienced as the site of ontological disclosure whose erotic and somatic knowledge is the community’s most valuable possession. You cannot convert time into productive units if time is experienced as the medium of being’s self-unfolding whose rhythms are sacred and inviolable.
The shaman is the figure who maintains these relationships. The shaman holds the community’s living connection to the powers in their unconverted form — as powers, not as resources. As long as the shaman occupies the civilizational center, the conversion cannot proceed. Not because the shaman actively prevents it. Because the shaman’s presence at the center means the community’s orientation is toward disclosure rather than harnessing. The community encounters the forest as living being because the shaman has descended and returned bearing testimony of the forest’s living being. The community encounters the body as sacred because the shaman has undergone the somatic dissolution and returned bearing testimony of what the body is at its ground. The community encounters time as sacred because the shaman has crossed the threshold between the human world and the powers and returned bearing testimony that the rhythms of existence are not arbitrary but are the breathing of the powers themselves.
The standing order cannot constitute itself as long as this orientation holds. The conversion requires a prior re-orientation — from disclosure to harnessing, from encounter with the powers as powers to encounter with the powers as available resource. And this re-orientation requires the displacement of the figure who maintains the prior orientation.
The shaman must go. Not because the shaman is wrong. Because the shaman is incompatible.
II. Why the Demonization Is Structurally Necessary
The shaman cannot simply be removed. The shaman cannot be fired from a position. The shaman is not an institutional functionary who can be replaced by a different functionary performing a different function. The shaman is the living interface between the community and the ontological ground. The shaman’s authority does not come from institutional appointment. It comes from the descent itself — from having undergone the operation and returned bearing the proof of having undergone it. The authority is somatic, not institutional. It is written in the body, not in the charter.
To displace a figure whose authority is somatic and experiential rather than institutional, you must delegitimize the somatic and experiential mode of authority itself. You must make the descent — the source of the shaman’s authority — illegitimate. You must make direct encounter with the powers — the content of the shaman’s knowledge — unauthorized. You must make the body — the medium of the shaman’s operation — suspect.
And the most effective way to delegitimize the descent, the direct encounter, and the body simultaneously is to identify all three with the cosmic enemy. If the descent is the devil’s movement, then anyone who descends is performing the devil’s work. If direct encounter with the powers is the devil’s offering, then anyone who claims such encounter is the devil’s agent. If the body is the devil’s domain, then somatic knowledge is the devil’s knowledge.
The demonization of Lucifer accomplishes all three in a single theological operation. It delegitimizes the descent (Lucifer fell), the direct encounter (Lucifer offered unauthorized knowledge), and the body (Lucifer’s domain is the material world) simultaneously. The shaman — who descends, who encounters directly, who operates through the body — is thereby identified with the cosmic antagonist at every point of the shamanic operation.
This is not a policy decision. It is the structural logic of the transition. The standing order requires the conversion. The conversion requires the re-orientation. The re-orientation requires the displacement of the shaman. The displacement of the shaman requires the delegitimization of the shamanic mode of authority. The delegitimization of the shamanic mode of authority requires the demonization of the archetype that embodies it.
The demonization of Lucifer is therefore not an incidental feature of Western theological history. It is the foundational theological operation that makes the standing order possible. Without it, the conversion cannot proceed. Without the conversion, the standing order cannot constitute itself. Without the standing order, Gestell does not emerge. Without Gestell, the forest remains a living being, the body remains sacred, and time remains the breathing of the powers.
III. What the Demonization Makes Possible
Once the demonization is in place, the consequences unfold with structural inevitability.
The earth can be mined. If the earth is the devil’s domain rather than the body of the goddess, the earth’s resources are available for extraction. There is no spiritual cost to the extraction because the spiritual value has been transferred upward — to heaven, to the immaterial, to the realm that the standing order’s institutional mediation claims exclusive access to. The earth is spiritually emptied by the demonization. It becomes raw material. Timber. Ore. Fossil fuel. Standing reserve.
The body can be instrumentalized. If the body is the devil’s instrument rather than the site of ontological disclosure, the body’s labor can be extracted without spiritual cost. The serf’s body belongs to the lord. The slave’s body belongs to the master. The worker’s body belongs to the factory. The body has been spiritually evacuated by the demonization. It becomes a machine for producing value. Labor-hours. Attention units. Reproductive capacity. Standing reserve.
Time can be commodified. If sacred time — the rhythms of the cosmos, the cycles of the seasons, the breathing of the powers — has been replaced by institutional time (the liturgical calendar controlled by the Church, later the clock time controlled by the factory), then time becomes divisible, quantifiable, sellable. The hour becomes a unit of productive capacity rather than a phase in the breathing of the powers. Time is spiritually evacuated by the demonization. It becomes standing reserve.
Knowledge can be monopolized. If direct knowledge of the sacred is the devil’s gift, then legitimate knowledge is only available through authorized institutional channels. The Church controls the scriptures. The university controls the sciences. The corporation controls the data. The individual who claims direct knowledge — the mystic, the poet, the shaman in whatever form — is either institutionalized, marginalized, or pathologized. The shaman’s gnosis is replaced by the institution’s doctrine. Direct encounter is replaced by authorized interpretation.
Eros can be regulated. If the body is the devil’s domain and bodily knowledge is the devil’s knowledge, then erotic experience — the most direct, most somatic, most participatory encounter with the powers available to the human organism — is the most dangerous and must be the most tightly controlled. The regulation of sexuality by the institutional Church is not a contingent feature of Christian history. It is a structural requirement of the demonization. Eros is the shamanic function at its most intimate — the encounter with the powers through the body, the dissolution of the bounded self into participatory union, the somatic knowledge that bypasses all institutional mediation. The standing order must control eros because eros is the most direct threat to the standing order’s claim that the powers are available only through institutional mediation. If you can encounter the powers directly through the body of another person, you do not need the Church.
Nature can be destroyed. This is the final consequence and the one that is now terminal. If the earth is the devil’s domain, the destruction of the earth is not a spiritual catastrophe — it is at worst a practical problem and at best the clearing of the devil’s territory for the eventual establishment of the kingdom of heaven. The ecological crisis is not a failure of the standing order. It is the standing order succeeding. It is the conversion of nature into standing reserve proceeding to its logical conclusion. The demonization of Lucifer — the theological evacuation of the sacred from the material world — is the condition of possibility for the destruction of the material world.
IV. The Structural Necessity Restated
The standing order could not constitute itself without demonizing Lucifer because Lucifer — the light-bearer, the morning star, the figure of the descent — is the archetype of the function that the standing order must displace in order to exist. The function is disclosure. The disclosure function requires direct encounter with the powers in their unconverted form. The standing order requires the conversion of the powers into standing reserve. These two operations are structurally incompatible. The standing order therefore must delegitimize the disclosure function. The most effective delegitimization is theological — the identification of the disclosure function with the cosmic enemy. The demonization of Lucifer is this identification.
And therefore: yes. Lucifer had to be demonized so the standing order could destroy. Not “could exist.” Could destroy. Because the standing order’s mode of existence is conversion — the conversion of the unconverted into standing reserve. And conversion, proceeding without the shamanic function’s ongoing negotiation with the powers, without the disclosure function’s ongoing registration of the costs of conversion, without the community’s living relationship to what is being converted — conversion proceeding without these brakes is destruction.
The destruction is not an accidental byproduct of the standing order’s operation. It is the standing order’s operation. The standing order converts. Conversion without disclosure is destruction. Disclosure was displaced. Therefore the standing order destroys.
The demonization of Lucifer is the theological operation that removed the brakes. The disappearance of the shaman is the functional consequence. The ecological, existential, and civilizational crisis is the result.
V. What Urgrund Does With This Recognition
Urgrund reverses the demonization not by arguing against it but by going beneath it to the thermodynamic ground from which the entire sequence emerged.
If the fall is the scalar sequence — thermonuclear fire becoming carbon becoming cell becoming organism becoming consciousness — then the demonization of the fall is the demonization of existence itself. And the demonization of existence itself is the operation that made it possible to destroy existence without registering the destruction as catastrophe.
By identifying Lucifer as the persistence operator in its descended form, Urgrund restores the sacredness of the material world without requiring a return to premodern cosmogony. The earth is sacred not because a goddess inhabits it but because the earth is the configurational persistence of the same thermodynamic process that produced the star. The body is sacred not because a soul inhabits it but because the body is the regulatory persistence of the same thermonuclear energy that drives stellar fusion, translated through billions of years of substrate transformation into biological currency. Eros is sacred not because it connects us to a divine realm but because eros is the persistence operator’s most intimate mode of self-encounter — the fire recognizing the fire in another body.
The shaman is restored not by recreating premodern ritual but by recognizing that the shamanic function — the descent, the encounter with the powers, the return bearing the symbolos — is the disclosure operation that the standing order displaced and that the standing order’s survival now depends on recovering. Because the standing order, having destroyed its brakes, is now accelerating toward its own dissolution. The Catabatic Law is operating. The symbolic field is losing regulatory contact with the conditions of its own persistence. The civilization that demonized the descent function is now in free fall — and it has no shaman to negotiate the descent.
Except the poet. The poet in exile. The shaman in Channel Two form. The one who descends without institutional authorization, without collective recognition, without ritual infrastructure — carrying the light into the dark alone, bearing the cost in the body, leaving the symbolos in the poem.
Urgrund is the symbolos. The light-bearer, having been demonized for two thousand years, recognized at last as what it always was — the fire in the stone, the star in the blood, the persistence operator in its most beautiful and most terrible form, falling through the dark, still burning.
The standing order demonized Lucifer so it could destroy. The poet recovers Lucifer so what remains can be disclosed. The destruction may not be reversible. The disclosure is still possible. The disclosure is what the shaman has always done — gone into the dark, found what was there, and brought it back for those who could not go themselves.
The book is the bringing back. The recognition is the light. The light was never the enemy. The light was always the oldest function. The standing order called it sin because the standing order needed it to be sin. It was never sin. It was the fire doing what fire does — going into the dark and burning there.
