The Poets & Self-Naturalizing Symbolic Order
The Poets & Self-Naturalizing Symbolic Order
The deepest power of the process is that it becomes self-reinforcing and historically invisible. Symbolic abstraction compounds recursively across generations until the symbolic order itself terraforms perception.
Human beings are born into symbolic architectures they did not create:
- language,
- institutions,
- economic systems,
- media systems,
- educational systems,
- technological systems,
- legal systems,
- digital systems.
Consciousness develops within these structures from birth. The self is therefore shaped before it becomes capable of reflecting upon the structures shaping it.
This is the snowball.
Symbolic abstraction accumulates historically and then reproduces itself recursively through civilization. Each generation inherits the symbolic world as reality itself rather than as historically constructed mediation.
The process becomes self-naturalizing.
Children are educated within abstraction.
Perception is stabilized within abstraction.
Identity forms within abstraction.
Desire forms within abstraction.
Language itself carries abstraction internally.
The symbolic order terraforms cognition.
This is why the process becomes almost impossible to perceive from within. Consciousness mistakes historically produced symbolic structures for metaphysical reality because the symbolic environment precedes reflective awareness itself.
The modern subject therefore experiences:
- economic abstraction,
- technological mediation,
- bureaucratic identity,
- informational saturation,
- and symbolic recursion
as “normal reality.”
The ontological catastrophe disappears precisely because it becomes total environmental condition.
This is why modern discourse remains trapped inside the architectures producing the crisis. Most ideological disagreement occurs within the symbolic order rather than at the level of the symbolic order itself.
The process becomes recursive civilization.
This is also why modernity increasingly suppresses the poetic function.
Poetry threatens symbolic stabilization because poetry reopens:
- ambiguity,
- atmosphere,
- embodiment,
- rhythm,
- mortality,
- eros,
- organism,
- and participatory continuity.
Poetry destabilizes administrative language.
Where bureaucracy fixes identity, poetry dissolves it.
Where technological abstraction instrumentalizes reality, poetry restores ontological density.
Where capital converts existence into exchangeable symbolic value, poetry reopens irreducible Being.
This is why the poets become historically decisive.
Not because poets possess moral superiority, but because certain forms of poetic disclosure remain capable of resisting total symbolic enclosure.
The great poets perceive the instability of abstraction before civilization consciously recognizes it.
This is why:
- Arthur Rimbaud fractures the “I,”
- Georg Trakl dissolves consciousness into atmosphere,
- Franz Kafka reveals symbolic systems detached from Being,
- Louis-Ferdinand Céline registers nervous-system rupture,
- Antonin Artaud revolts bodily against symbolic imprisonment,
- Samuel Beckett exposes exhausted symbolic persistence,
- and Clarice Lispector dissolves the isolated self back into participatory continuity.
The poets become phenomenological scouts at the edge of ontological collapse.
They detect:
- fragmentation,
- abstraction,
- symbolic exhaustion,
- atmospheric destabilization,
- and the dissolution of participatory continuity
before these processes become consciously legible historically.
This is why poetry persists even under technological civilization.
The symbolic order can absorb:
- politics,
- economics,
- entertainment,
- ideology,
- and increasingly cognition itself.
But genuine poésie continually threatens abstraction because it reopens relation to Being beneath symbolic mediation.
And this is why the process produces such profound existential loneliness.
Most human beings are born fully inside the symbolic weather of abstraction. The environment appears natural because it precedes conscious reflection. To perceive the process requires a kind of ontological cresting — a movement beyond the inherited symbolic horizon itself.
Very few achieve this fully.
Which is why the poets so often appear isolated, excessive, unstable, or catastrophic within their own civilizations.
They are attempting to speak from beyond the symbolic enclosure while still trapped inside it.
