Unified Framework: Run Atmosphere is the “Weather” of Phase Change
Unified Framework: Run Atmosphere is the “Weather” of Phase Change
Final Baseline
Run Atmosphere (RE) is the baseline for everything.
It is the epoch’s prevailing scoring weather —the mean run level of the system you are measuring inside.

This RE is the constitutional ground.
Unified Framework
Run Atmosphere is the “Weather” of Phase Change
Baseball history is not a single continuous performance field. It is segmented by phase changes —system-level transitions in scoring physics (ball composition, rules, parks, tactics, talent distribution, travel, equipment, schedule structure, etc.).
Those phase changes manifest as shifts in run atmosphere :
Deadball: low-pressure scoring weather
Live-ball: high-pressure scoring weather
War/contraction: pressure compression
Integration/expansion: new density structure under evolving weather
RE tracks these phase states because it measures the system’s prevailing output of runs—the simplest stable macroscopic variable of the run-production engine.
So instead of comparing players across eras by forcing everyone into one league’s baseline, you do something more structural:
You declare the weather of each epoch, then measure performance as deviation from that weather.
This turns fractured history into one architecture.
Two Dynamics, One Baseline
Run atmosphere is shared. The only difference is direction:
Hitters generate runs within the atmosphere.
Pitchers suppress runs against the atmosphere.
That gives you two symmetrical formulas.
A) Hitting: Run-Generation Relative to Atmosphere
Step 1 — Build a player’s run production from components
Use a transparent first-order run creation model (component-based; no league-relative stats required):

Step 2 — Normalize to the epoch’s run atmosphere
Define Hitting Regime-Normalized Dominance :

Interpretation:
The fraction of the epoch’s team scoring weather a hitter generates per game.
You can express it as a percentage:

This is what we did with Ruth and Gibson: “under the same sky,” what share of the weather does each hitter generate?
B) Pitching: Run-Suppression Relative to Atmosphere
Step 1 — Build a pitcher’s run allowance from components
Use raw run prevention, not ERA+:

(If you want an earned-only version, use (ER) instead of (R), but RA9 is more robust across scorer ecosystems.)
Step 2 — Normalize to the epoch’s run atmosphere
Define Pitching Regime-Normalized Dominance :

Interpretation:
How far below the epoch’s scoring weather a pitcher forces run allowance.
This is the pitching mirror of the hitting equation.
One System, Many Epochs
How RE Unifies Segregated and “Nominally Separate” Baseball Worlds
The core idea:
RE is a macroscopic environmental constant.
It is not owned by MLB. It is not owned by any database.
It is the measurable climate of an epoch.
Once you declare RE per epoch, you can compare across:
Eras (Deadball vs Live-ball vs Integration vs Expansion)
Leagues (MLB vs Major Negro Leagues)
Segregational phases (pre-integration vs integration)
Dimensions of play (hitting vs pitching)
without collapsing everything into one league’s coordinate system.
Because you are no longer asking:
“How far above their league average were they?”
You are asking:
“How much run force did they generate/suppress relative to the epoch’s weather?”
That is what makes the framework portable.
The Integration Constitution
How to Declare the Baseline Properly
1) If both leagues are constitutable (e.g., 1920–1935)
You can declare:

Then you can:
evaluate players on their native sky
or translate to a common sky (integrated ground)
This is how you avoid “collapsing one world into the other.”
2) If only one league is constitutable (e.g., Deadball 1900–1919)
There is no stable official Negro League schedule universe.
So you adopt the deep-history rule:
Single-Sky Constitution: declare the best-measured atmospheric proxy (MLB) as the epoch’s prevailing weather.
Then:

This is not a concession. It is epistemological discipline: you do not invent baselines you cannot constitutionally define.
Why This Works
The Architecture of Measure
This framework is unified because it respects the lawful order:
Boundary : declare the epoch and admissible universe
Baseline : constitute run atmosphere (RE)
Performance : compute raw production (RC/G) or suppression (RA9)
Dominance : express as ratio to (RE)
Everything downstream becomes stable.
And the key philosophical point (which is also mathematical) is:
Metrics do not exist without a baseline.
Baselines do not exist without boundaries.
Run atmosphere is the baseline that reveals epochal phase change.
So baseball history becomes a sequence of climatic regimes , each with its own weather, and greatness becomes:
run force generated per game relative to that weather (hitting)
run force suppressed per game relative to that weather (pitching)
That is a unified architecture of measure across fractured baseball history.
